Merry Christmas

Avcor had a wonderful Christmas lunch where we gathered to have a nice meal of barbeque, exchange gifts and stories and to hand out awards and prizes. Everyone received an Avcor bag, lotion and their Christmas bonus. Additionally we had a drawing for five $50 gift cards. We had the private dining room at Dickey’s all to ourselves and reveled in the joy of the season. Christmas is a special time at Avcor. The good tidings of the season spill over and make our office a wonderful place to work. We take the entire week of Christmas off and shut down the facilities to spend time with our families. We also recognized Rogelio Solozano’s 30th anniversary with the company by giving him an Avcor watch. This was also awarded at the Christmas lunch. Merry Christmas...

All Hat and No Cattle

There is an expression in Texas:  “All Hat and No Cattle”.  It refers to someone who may look the part but doesn’t live it.  The image is of a cowboy who doesn’t work on a ranch or own cattle.  By way of disclosure I have to admit that I do own cattle but would hardly consider myself a cowboy.  The real ones should be admired for their hard work and abilities. In healthcare it isn’t uncommon to find a “manufacturer” who doesn’t actually make anything.  This is the healthcare version of All Hat and No Cattle.  Their name is on the box but not on the factory that makes it.  Because they don’t actually make a product, often we find that they don’t even understand it. “All Hat and No Cattle Manufacturers” can be interesting if not confusing to listen to.  I’ve heard them complain about the quality, availability or some feature of their “product” and I wanted to ask them why they didn’t change whatever was concerning them.  After all, they are the ultimate determiner of their product.  They informed me that manufacturing decisions are made somewhere else. One of the benefits of actually making our own product is that we get to constantly review it and make it better.  If we don’t like something, we change it.  If we see a better way to do it or a way to make it better we simply change what we are doing.  Our folks are always looking at ways to improve what we do and the products we...

The Cost of Quality

In a healthcare system that is striving for cost savings, how do we preserve quality?  Ultimately healthcare is about care.  If we erode the quality of our products and tools, do we not also risk compromising our outcomes?  That is the questions healthcare administrators are asking.  They have a proverbial three legged stool with the legs being cost, quality and outcomes.  They are being asked to cut one of those legs shorter while maintaining the other two legs.  Any furniture maker would immediately point out the problems you would face with such a stool.  These three facets of healthcare are interconnected and directly related.  How do we reduce costs without reducing quality and ultimately outcomes?  There appear to be only a few alternatives that have a possibility of success. Reduce waste Improve efficiencies Reduce profit margins The other alternatives would require some reduction in care.  The reduction of care has certainly been considered as an alternative.  Before I address the three points noted above let’s look at reduction of care because healthcare providers are.  We do not like to think that we are reducing care but let’s look at a few examples. Taxation of Cadillac Healthcare Plans – the government has set a bar for the acceptable level of healthcare benefits a person should receive.  If they pay for better care they are taxed. Reductions of services – hospitals are being forced to reduce their extended services and concentrate on their core competencies.  This means reducing neighborhood clinics, and specialty care facilities.  It also means that some hospitals will only take patients in need of their specialties and transfer...

Beth Sullivan, RN

Your All-in-One product is a real time saver.  We recently brought several of your arm support products into my hospital and used them on patients.  They were effective, easy to use, and quick.  It saved us having to make trips to the supply closet to get everything we usually use when we build an armboard restraint. About two weeks ago, I hurt my foot.  At the time I did not know I had broken a bone.  All I knew is that I had some tape from Avcor, that would actually hold my toe in place, and even though it still hurt, it felt secure enough to continue by normal activities.  I was even able to wear my tennis shoe, while I walked.  The tape was not thick, and really secured my foot, and best of all stayed in the same place. I only had enough for three days so I went went to the local pharmacy to purchase something similar to wrap my foot. Much to my disappointment, there is nothing that compares to the tape that you had given me from Avcor.   The white sports tape did not secure my foot, it kept slipping in place, and was very difficult to use.  I had to have scissors to cut it, which is not like Avcor, so easy to tear and apply. Without the use of the Avcor tape, my foot continued to hurt and was painful enough that I had to visit the podiatrist.  Yes, it was broken and the doctor office used some of their tape, wrapped it, and told me to wear a shoe to keep the bone in place for the next 4 weeks. But much to the doctor’s surprise, it had started to heal and no other damage had been done. It had to be the Avcor Tape that secured my bone.  Before I got home the tape that was used in the doctor office had slipped off.  I was so frustrated with the situation, I sent you a text and...

Donna L. Groce

I want to take the time to send you a personal thank you and let you know how Avcor products “out perform” all the rest.  We visited at the beach in July and I wanted to know more about the products you sold.  You shared a couple of samples with me and before I knew it I had a need for them.  At first I used the tape on my foot when I cut it walking on the beach.  I wrapped the tape on it and it stayed in place on my foot.  I was able to continue to walk on the beach and not worry about replacing bandages every time it got wet.  It really was an easy way to take care of a wound. Donna L. Groce on Ice...

Patients and healthcare providers are focused on finding the best possible products and solutions for care. For nurses, physicians, and medical professionals, the right healthcare products can make the difference between a positive outcome, or one that’s less than favorable. At Avcor, we’re focused on delivering products that heal efficiently, and comfortably. MedAssets provides a value-oriented pathway for us to deliver those products. One of our most popular products, is the IceRight™bandage. Any type of muscle, joint, or bone injury needs some level of compression or cold therapy. Ice Right™ is a simple self-contained product, which fuses both compression and cold therapy together. (This means you don’t need to hold a melting ice bag up to your skin!) Ice Right™ is revolutionary. It comes in a zip-lock baggie which doubles as the system’sice container. The wrap has a pocket on one end attached to a 6-inch wide, 36-inch (97- inch stretched) long, latex-free compression bandage. The wrap itself can be washed after each use, dried, and stored in the plastic baggie. Ice Right™ is great for wrapping limbs, and in hard to reach areas such as around the shoulders. When I teach healthcare professionals about Avcor products, either in a classroom seminar or a physician’s office or a hospital setting, it’s exciting to see their reactions. As I demonstrate the product application, they can immediately experience the ease of use. Ice Right™ is just one of the unique products we sell. tennis elbow. My mother uses Ice Right™ on her ankle. Getting through the day without cold compression is downright painful, but Ice Right™ makes it easier step-by- step. Open the package, put the ice in the baggie, slip the baggie into the compression wrap pocket, place on the...
